One Reason Laptops Overheat

When this laptop was first brought in to me the owner explained that it had been running hot for quite a while but then the fan started making noise. After some more time the fan stopped completely. You can see in the video how the cooling fins were completely clogged and therefore not getting any airflow. The fan turned out to have a piece of plastic stuck in it and after I removed the foreign debris the fan worked again. Now the laptop is functioning at normal working temperatures.

Where did that little piece of plastic come from? It looked like a fastener clip so I looked around on the top lid and found the place where it broke. Once the little clip broke free it traveled around and eventually found it’s way into the fan. Then it rattled around in the fan until it finally lodged itself between a fin and the outer wall.
